Banner advertising rates tend to be competitive. They have to be, if they expect to bring in any income. In exchange for this, the companies guarantee results if they are of a pay per click mindset. That is, you only pay for legitimate clicks on your banner, resulting in the visitor being taken to your website. An example might be five cents per click, if you pay in advance for 5,000 clicks on a standard size banner.

Before signing up, make sure you would have a private account area on the service's site. This is where you would track how many times the ad had been viewed--and clicked on, whatever it is that you'd be paying for upfront. It's helpful if there's a demo on the site to show exactly how the program works. If not, research and your own best judgment will determine your route to follow.

Make sure the advertising service is set up to identify fraudulent clicks. This means that you can identify a competitor's employees repeatedly clicking on your banner to use up your clicks. It will be your responsibility to point out those fraudulent clicks to the advertising service.

Rates for strategically placed banners only are based on different counting criteria. You'll want to know the sites the banners will be placed on, to make sure they're targeted to potential customers. There's not much point trying to sell dog toys to visitors looking for investment advice, though they may well own dogs. (A few may buy from you.) You'll be paying for the number of times the visitor views your banner ad. An example is $150 for 50,000 page views.
