Movies By Mail

by Devin Flanigan

What are the advantages of renting movies by mail? First of all, with most online subscriptions services, you won't have to pay late fees or extended viewing fees. Instead, you sign up for a rotating queue of rentals. In other words, you pay a flat monthly rate to use the service which allows you to take out a maximum number of movie rentals at any one time. To clear your queue, you have to return one or more of your rentals in a provided envelope to the company.

The great aspect of this system is that you don't have to worry about time constraints. You can watch movies and return them at your own pace. Moreover, since you can cycle movies in and out of your queue according to priority, you can continue to rent new movies even as you hold onto an old flick that you haven't had time to watch yet.

Most movie rental agencies stock a diverse and expanding catalog of DVD choices. You can get foreign films, classic films from the 1930s and 1940s, experimental and Indie films--even video game rentals. If you sign up for a premium subscription service, you may be entitled to a discount on your monthly rates, free movie theater tickets, coupons on movie-related paraphernalia and the like.

Bear in mind that, unless you live very close to a distribution center, it may take between three to five days to receive your movies. Some services will allow you to expedite shipping at additional costs, but you can't get same-day service like you can at the corner video store. That said, the advantages of using online movie rental services are profound, and there's no question that this business model is changing the entertainment industry.
