Fossils For Sale

by Amy Grant

Did you know that you can own your very own piece of history by purchasing a fossil or fossil replica? Fossils are beautiful, natural, fascinating pieces of preserved nature, which is why thousands of people buy, sell, trade and collect fossils all over the world. Fossils are beautiful to display, and make great conversation pieces due to their unique story.

Buying Fossils: What You Need to Know

When purchasing fossils or replicas, two questions are important to consider. First, what is your main motivation for owning and displaying a fossil collection? Second, what is your budget? By taking these two factors into account, you can make appropriate choices in building your personal fossil collection.

It is important to remember that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to enjoy fossils. However, a person who enjoys fossils mainly for their beauty will likely assemble a different collection than, say, a dinosaur enthusiast, or someone who is interested in fossils as an investment. Another important factor to consider is who will view your collection. A science teacher who is paying for her own collection out of pocket may choose to purchase mostly replicas, with a few genuine articles. On the other hand, if you enjoy entertaining, and plan to share your collection by educating a wide audience of viewers, you may choose a number of different types of specimens. Consider your reasons for owning fossils, and use these reasons to purchase fossils or replicas that are of interest to you and serve your overall purpose.

Your budget may be the limiting factor on the size and choices in your own fossil collection. Several companies that offer fossils for sale also offer replicas. A replica is a cast made from an original fossil. Most replicas look exactly like authentic fossils, and many museums house replicas in their natural history displays. For obvious reasons, replicas cost significantly less than actual fossil specimens. If you are purchasing fossils as a long-term investment, buy only quality specimens and buy the best you can afford.
