Clean Air

by Tara Peris

If you're like most people, you've been hearing a lot about clean air these days. From environmental agencies bemoaning the effects of car exhaust and smog to doctors and scientists underscoring the harmful effects of cigarette smoke exposure, we hear a good deal about the dangers of polluted air. In an increasingly industrial society, however, we hear much less about what can be done to provide clean air.

Breathe Easy

Clean air is not simply beneficial; it is vital. Studies have shown that exposure to second hand cigarette smoke for even short periods of time can damage the lungs in irreversible ways. Similarly, there is considerable research documenting the health maladies that accrue to children raised in inner city environments where air pollution is not controlled. Among the many adverse health effects associated with exposure to polluted air, asthma and lung disease are among the most common outcomes.

Findings such as these underscore the importance of breathing clean air. Yet, in a society where cars, trucks, buildings, and businesses produce pollutants each and every day, finding clean air can be a tall order. Along these lines, battles rage on at both the state and federal level about how best to balance industry and progress with basic human wellbeing.

As this debate is not likely to resolve any time soon, it is up to the individual to seek out clean air solutions. Luckily, there are many viable options these days, including air purifiers, furnace filters, and ventilating devices. With just a bit of legwork, it should be easy to find the solution that makes the most sense for your home or office space.
