Commercial Ozone Air Purifiers

by Tara Peris

Commercial ozone air purifiers use the distinctive composition of the ozone molecule to remove allergens and air pollutants. By ridding the air of these irritants, they can provide immediate relief to most allergy symptoms. Moreover, clean air in offices and classrooms can reduce the transmission of colds and flu viruses that propagate in closed spaces.

Using Ozone Purifiers Safely

Commercial ozone air purifiers differ from regular air cleaners in critical ways. Rather than simply filtering out airborne pollutants, these purifiers actually clean the air. They rely on the three oxygen atoms that comprise the ozone molecule to accomplish this task. By using a form of "activated oxygen" these machines can target and destroy bacteria and allergens through natural mechanisms. More specifically, a negatively charged particle can break off from the ozone molecule, bind to pollutants, and then oxidize them.

Ozone air purifiers have been used in many parts of the world for decades. They remain in wide use in hospitals, businesses, and other settings where frequent foot traffic increases the risk of illness and allergies. However, they are not without controversy.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cautioned that the oxygen atoms in ozone are structurally distinct from the oxygen in the air we breathe. Indeed, they have promoted an ozone motto that states: "good up high, bad nearby." As a result, it is important to research ozone purifiers carefully before making a purchase. Although many are likely to be safe, effective devices, it is important to choose a product with a demonstrated record for safety.
