Diesel Fuel Odor Removal

by Tara Peris

If you've ever had the misfortune to spill diesel fuel, you know that removing the odor can pose a real challenge. Whether it is a matter of a few errant drops that slash on clothes during a routine fill-up, or a major catastrophe involving the car's interior, you're bound to have a big task on your hands. Choose the cleaner carefully, however, and you should be able to remove fuel odors without damaging materials

High-Octane Cleaning Solutions

When attempting to repair the damage of a fuel spill, the first thing you must do is to assess the situation. Take a moment to determine whether the fuel has saturated the surface and if so, how far it has seeped. This is especially important for car interiors, where the contents of a tipped fuel jug are likely to go all the way to the felt pads along the floorboard.

Anything that can be replaced should be, as this will get rid of odor as quickly as possible. However, with upholstery that cannot be removed, you will want to begin by blotting the spill with a good high-powered solvent. Many companies that specialize in cleaning products and air filters will offer specialty products that can break down stains without harming upholstery fabric.

After you have blotted at the stain with the solvent, you will likely need to do a second pass with another cleaning agent. You might consider a product with emulsifying properties that you can leave in for a few hours before taking another shot at stain and odor removal. This will loosen fuel and allow it to be extracted from the material more easily. It's a time consuming process, but one that will allow you to remove foul fuel odor effectively.
