Dust Mite Control

by Tara Peris

Proper dust mite control is essential to protecting the health of your family. Although dust mites are common inhabitants of many households, in large quantities, they can pose serious health risks. Indeed, recent research has linked dust mites to an array of chronic health conditions.

Another One Bites the Dust

Dust mites are minuscule animals that feed off of house dust and skin particles. They nestle in nooks and on bodies, leaving tiny droppings wherever they go. Exceedingly small, these critters thrive in moist, humid environments, although they can be found in more neutral climates as well. Every home is likely to have a few dust mites from time to time, but some homes suffer from large infestations of them.

Dust mites are problematic because of the droppings they leave behind. Specifically, their excretions contain the enzymes that are used to metabolize the dust and skin they eat. Recent research has implicated these specific enzymes in the onset and exacerbation of several illnesses. Notably, dust mites have been linked to asthma, allergies, and chronic eczema.

These risks make it essential to keep dust mites under control. Doctors recommend a variety of practical solutions designed to keep dust mites away without requiring people to spend hours of time cleaning. Dust proof covers for beds and furniture are a good starting point in most homes. In addition, specialty vacuums, air filters, and chemical solutions are all likely to be of use in helping to keep mites away.
