Mildew Odor Removal

by Tara Peris

Mildew odor removal need not be a miserable process. With the right tools at your disposal, it is possible to get rid of mildew and its trademark aroma in a quick, efficient, and permanent manner. The key is to understand the basics of how mildew functions and to operate strategically to get rid of it completely.

Getting Rid of Mildew Odor

If you've ever left a wet bathing suit in the wrong place, you know that it doesn't take long for it to acquire a rather unpleasant smell. Although irritating, this rank odor is but a symptom of a deeper problem. Damp material is a veritable playground for mildew and mold and it doesn't take long for either substance to take root and proliferate. When they do, you can expect a pungent aroma to follow.

It's a smell that doesn't chase away easily. Mildewed clothing may have to go through several rounds of the wash before it begins to smell fresh again. This is because mildew spores are airborne and they can linger in the tiniest of places. To really get rid of mildew and its accompanying aroma, you must use a multi-pronged approach.

Your first step is to replace absorbent materials that may harbor mildew spores and to clean all remaining surfaces thoroughly with antibacterial solution. You must then adjust the indoor climate to make it less conducive to mildew. This means adjusting the temperature and controlling for humidity, as warm, damp environments are your worst enemy when it comes to mildew. An air filtering system can be extremely useful in this regard, as it can keep air cool, clean, and dry.
