Mildew Prevention

by Tara Peris

Mildew prevention need not be a high tech, labor-intensive endeavor. In fact, many would tell you that it is akin to temperature control. Adjust your indoor climate and you are likely to do away with many problems related to both mildew and mold.

Clean and Simple

Admittedly, it's a bit of a simplistic stance. However, mildew and mold both rely on moisture to flourish. As a result, they are more likely to be found in warm, humid climates compared to cool dry ones. Although these organisms will take roots in just about any home, researchers have found that people who live in arid mountain towns tend to see less of them.

With this in mind, it makes sense to approach mildew prevention mindful of the importance of climate control. Dry, clean. Air is your single best tool in the fight against mildew. Critically, this does not mean using a common household fan. Mold and mildew comprise spores that travel through the air and bind to dank surfaces. Thus, a fan is likely to circulate spores rather than eliminating them.

This is one reason why many people recommend the use of an air purifier. These systems do not simply circulate air; they clean it. With high-grade filters, they capture microscopic spores and bacterial fibers and prevent them from becoming airborne. This in turn keeps them from taking root in damp corners of your home. An air purifier is not your only mildew prevention tool, but it among the more effective.
