Mold Remediation

by Tara Peris

Effective mold remediation begins with education. In order to treat existing mold and to prevent future growth, you must understand what mold is and how it grows. This in turn will inform your decision about how best to protect your home.

Warm and Cozy

Mold is an organism that can grow anywhere, although it favors damp, humid environments. Mold produces spores as it propagates and these spores are passed through the environment easily. Given that these organisms are always in the air, they can bind to moist surfaces and begin to grow with ease.

It is not possible to eradicate mold together; it simply exists in too many forms and places. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the single best strategy for mold rededication is moisture control. All too often, mold is allowed to flourish because it invades small, damp crevices where it remains undetected. Conducting a careful sweep of your home for such hideouts is a good first precaution. This is especially true after floods, when water may seep into unexpected places and wreak havoc. You got a maximum of 48 hours to get water out before mold comes in and sets up shop.

Of course, your best overall strategy is to maintain a moisture-free home environment. This means keeping a close eye on leaky faucets and pipes that may allow moisture to creep indoors. It also means removing carpets and flooring that may be harboring mold spores. Finally, it means using an air purifier that can filter mold spores and prevent them from circulating through the environment. A good system will remove existing spores and maintain a dry climate that limits their ability to breed.
