Odor Elimination

by Tara Peris

At one time or another, most of us have needed help with removing a foul odor from our homes. Saddled with the burden of removing the stench, we have resorted to all kinds of measures. From old wives' tales to hard-core antibacterial agents, we'll try anything that comes our way, desperate for a breath of fresh air.

Using Common Sense in Odor Removal

If you've ever been forced to contend with an unpleasant odor for an extended period of time, you know that it is sheer misery. Our sense of smell is one of our most astute senses and it exerts an extremely powerful effect. When exposed to noxious odors, we not only feel it in our noses, but we can taste it as well. In extreme cases, bad smells can even make our eyes water and other senses falter.

More than anything, foul odors distract us. They divert our attention from more important matters and they diminish our productivity. This is precisely why it is so important to eliminate these smells as quickly as possible. We're not talking about masking the smell--that rarely works when the aroma is pungent--we're talking about removing it together.

To remove odors effectively, you must go straight to the source. Different cleaning agents work well for different instigators, so your tools may vary depending on whether you are dealing with mildew, cat spray, or moldy food. However, regardless of the source, you must clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before moving on to other odor elimination measures. Lingering odors may be removed with chemical cleaners or air purification equipment, but the source must be addressed effectively to keep them from returning.
