Removing Cat Urine Odors

by Tara Peris

Removing cat urine odor is not nearly as easy as one might think. Conventional carpet cleaners and household sprays rarely do the trick. Moreover, they may be unsafe to use on delicate home furnishings. If you really want to get the smell out, you'll need specialty cleaners designed just for harsh odors.

Remove Odor at its Roots

If your dear little Princess has the good graces to pee on the carpet, thank her for it. This is among the easier areas to clean, although admittedly, it's no cake walk. You should begin by repeatedly blotting the stain with paper towels, applying pressure without rubbing. Once you have completed this process several times, you will want to use a specialty cleaning fluid to get the odor out.

Note that specialty cleaners are not the same as carpet shampoo. A good cleaner will have ingredients that oxidize the enzymes in cat urine and help to break them down. This is the step that will really get the odor out. From there, you can follow up with a conventional carpet shampoo to make things smell pretty once again.

For cat urine smells that really linger, you may want to consider using professional services. Ozone shock treatments will require you and Princess to leave the premises, but they will sterilize everything in your home and leave it smelling clean and fresh once again. Quick, easy, and remarkably effective, they are a surefire tool for removing stubborn odors.
