The money paid in advance is applied to your season ticket purchase when you finally obtain the tickets. Individual tickets are not sold by wait list.

A limited number of individual tickets may be released to the public a couple of months before the start of the season. These usually are not premium tickets because they are the seats that were not claimed by season ticket holders. The best way to obtain a premium seat for an individual game is through a ticket broker. Ticket brokers obtain seats for individual games from season ticket holders who choose to resell their seats.

Since demand for NFL tickets is extremely high, tickets sold by brokers will be priced high above face value. This mark up is lower if you are flexible with your choice of dates. The prices set by ticket brokers fluctuate wildly depending upon the demand for a particular game.
