Cigar Smoking

by Wendy Jackson

So you've finally decided to try smoking your first cigar. (You've seen the shows and read many stories about people becoming ill after their first few escapades into cigar land, yet you still want to give it a try.) To have a pleasant cigar smoking experience, there are a few things you can do to help your system adjust.

So, You Want to Smoke a Cigar?

Cigar smoking is a refined art. You certainly don't approach cigar smoking like you do cigarette smoking. This is one of the major causes of individuals becoming sick. Cigar smoke should never, ever be inhaled; instead, it should simply be tasted and exhaled. Also, you should only light a cigar with a cigar lighter, or matches. The cigar can take on the taste of the lighter fluid. Try to keep the end of your cigar dry, and avoid chewing on it.

When you go to purchase your first cigar, pay attention to the color of the wrapper. A lighter wrapper usually represents a milder cigar. The darker the wrapper, the stronger or sweeter it is. My recommendation would be to start with a mild cigar, instead of hitting the hard stuff your first time out of the gate. You may want to purchase a few different kinds to experiment and find out what tastes good to you.

My advice for a first-time cigar smoker is to purchase cigars with a smaller ring size. You can conquer the larger cigars once you have acquired your cigar smoking technique. Feeling the cigar for quality is something you will learn to do. You do not want to purchase a cigar that is very hard, very soft, or a mixture of both. You also do not want to purchase cigars that have dried out. These burn quickly, and can taste very rough. The best thing you can do when smoking your first cigar is to take it slow--aficionados know that cigars can take up to an hour to smoke.
