Cigar Cutters

by Wendy Jackson

If you are going to be a cigar smoker, you have to learn how to cut your cigars. The process of cutting the cigars is to allow air to circulate from one end of the cigar to the other. We've all seen actors in movies and on television bite the end off of a cigar. This is a quick way to achieve the result, but is not generally recommended. When you go to cut your cigar, you want it to be smooth and clean. People who are deft with a knife can choose to use this as their instrument of choice. For those less experienced with a knife, there are different cigar cutters on the market from which to choose.

Which Cutter Is Right for You?

A popular style among cigar smokers is the guillotine cutter. This instrument makes a complete cut across the cap line. It does provide good circulation; however, buildup forms on the tip. Most cigar smokers do not like their mouths to be in contact with this tar-like residue. Many are choosing the punch cut, or bullet cutter. This device pierces a small hole into the cigar cap. The diameter of this cutter is such that it ensures proper circulation in the cigar. Residues can also build up around the hole and restrict circulation.

The V cutter is also popular among cigar smokers. This instrument cuts a wedge in the cigar's cap. Reside and buildup tend to occur around the sides of the cigar when it is pierced with a V cutter. Smokers like this because it keeps the bad taste from their mouths. The only drawback to the V cutter is the fact that it dulls easily.

Experiment with different techniques and devices to see which works the best for you. Cutters can be ordered on the Internet. They can also be purchased at most cigar stores or tobacco outlets.
