Imported Cigars

by Wendy Jackson

Imported cigars have marks that distinguish them from fakes. It is important to learn about imported cigars and their markings, which differ based on the country of origin. Each country has its own laws governing tobacco, and the packaging of their products will be different.

Is Your Cigar Box Authentic?

If you are importing cigars from England, you should look for an "EMS" sticker that is applied to the upper left corner of each box. Each of these will have its own serial number. Each year, the color of this sticker will change. Make sure the box you are purchasing matches up.

If you are purchasing cigars from the Netherlands, these have a small seal on the right-hand edge of each box of cigars. These seals are beige. German cigar boxes have a tax stamp along the top edge, and an official label on the bottom of the box. If you are purchasing from Australia, these boxes have an Alexander Group serial number on the bottom of the box, along with a white and blue importer stamp on the bottom front edge of each box.

Don't be fooled by imitations. Cigars can be very expensive. By educating yourself about the country from which you are importing your cigars, you can avoid falling prey to scams set up by people just out to make a quick buck.
