Canvas Awnings

by Patricia Skinner

Traditional canvas awnings can still be preferable to modern, synthetic fabrics for your home. Canvas drapes well, is porous and so breathes more efficiently, and can even better resist damage from the sun's rays. For many different reasons, canvas is likely to give you better and longer service. So while they are initially more expensive, canvas awnings can be more economical in the long run.

Complementing Architectural Style

When you pick an awning, consider the architectural style of your home. Some types of awnings are better suited to a modern environment, while others can give you just the look you need for a more traditional space. Remember that in some areas, particularly historical areas, inauthentic materials are not permitted. In such cases, only cotton canvas awnings may be used.

It is true that in some instances, nylon can give superior performance to cotton canvas. Nylon will last longer if it is the woven type, and it will certainly keep its color without fading far longer. For certain commercial applications, nylon awnings will be far more practical where large areas need to be covered, and where an awning may need to be erected and dismantled repeatedly.

If you decide to use cotton canvas awnings, it is particularly important to learn how to care for it. Never roll or retract a canvas awning if it's not dry. This will lead to mold and rapid deterioration. If possible, remove the awning for periodic cleaning, as dust and dirt will also contribute to fiber destruction. Remember that constant exposure to rain and snow will shorten the life of your awning, so plan to store it during the times of year when it won't be used.
