Deck Awnings

by Patricia Skinner

A deck can be a wonderful addition to any home. It can let you really enjoy living outside. You may decide to make the deck the focus of your outside living space. Perhaps you've installed a barbeque area, or even a Jacuzzi. Such activities can be great outdoors, but occasionally we realize afterwards that the sun is an obstacle to our enjoyment, or we may feel that privacy is lacking.

The solution can often be supremely easy and inexpensive. Installing an awning will provide you with year-round protection from the sun whatever you want to do on your deck. In addition, you will find that an awning provides a high level of privacy from any neighbors that may overlook your property. Once you have installed your awning, you may find that your perfect outdoors spot is complete.

Do-It-Yourself Awnings

In all probability you will be able to install an awning for your deck yourself. The only reason you might decide to call in a technician is if you have a motorized awning. In this case it may be best to let an electrician install the mechanism professionally for you. For an automatic awning, mistakes in installation could cause damage to the item.

While a regular retractable deck awning will most likely meet your needs, there are more permanent options. For example, an aluminum awning will provide a permanent cover for your deck. Make sure that this is what you want before you install one, because most of them are not retractable.
