New England Sailing Vacations

by Sandy Mitchell

From the craggy coastline of Maine, along the scenic and quirky Nantucket Sound, to the shameless opulence of Newport, Rhode Island, a New England sailing vacation offers a taste of everything. Enjoy a freshly-caught, steamed lobster dinner, marvel at the whales slowly making their way north to their summer homes, and explore the numerous, unique lighthouses that dot the eastern shoreline.

A sailing vacation is a relaxed way to see New England. Choose a five-night to two-week itinerary, but reserve the right to linger in a port that catches your fancy. No driving or packing and unpacking: your charter sailboat takes you where you need to go.

The Maine Event

Sailboats may be chartered with or without a crew. If desired, the crew, generally, consists of the captain, one or more mates, and a cook. The crew will take care of the ship, steer the ship to your next port, keep the ship clean, and prepare three meals daily. All you have to do is relax and enjoy your vacation.

Sailboats range in size from 30-foot to over 100-foot and can accommodate from two to twelve or more passengers. Each boat is different, but most include private cabins each for two persons, one or more bathrooms, and a galley kitchen. One price, generally, includes everything: the sailboat charter, all meals and provisions, fuel, and moorings fees.

Reserve your sailing vacation with your local travel agent or by contacting a New England charter boat specialist. Many online tour operators offer pictures and descriptions of their ships on their websites. Some even offer virtual tours of the sailboats.
