Family Sailing Vacations

by Sandy Mitchell

A sailing vacation can be a great way for a family to spend time together away from the demands of school, office, and daily life. Sailing offers something for all ages. From active watersports, like snorkeling and scuba, to just sitting on deck with a good book, the variety of activities on a sailboat is limited only by your imagination.

Sailing offers flexibility. If you are having a particularly good time in port, you can stay an extra day. Sailing is casual--no need to dress for dinner. You can spend the vacation in shorts and a tee shirt. What kid wouldn't love that? Sailing also gives you access to small, lesser-known ports where the larger ships can't dock.

A Family That Sails Together

Sailboats can be chartered with or without a crew. If you are an experienced sailor, chartering a "bareboat" sailboat can be great way to interest your kids in sailing. Conversely, if you just want to relax, the crew can take care of everything--navigating the boat, keeping the ship clean, and cooking delicious meals.

Sailboats are individual and vary enormously. In most parts of the world, sailboats are available to accommodate from two to twelve guests. Generally, one price includes the sailboat charter, transportation to and from the ship, and meals and provisions. Many companies also include fuel and moorings fees.

Make reservations for your family sailing adventure with your local travel agent or with a specialty sailing vacation operator. They can take care of everything from airfare to the sailboat charter to any accommodations you may need before or after the cruise. A sailing vacation could become the annual family trip for years to come.
