Bahamas Sailing Vacations

by Sandy Mitchell

The Bahamas, that delightful collection of diverse islands, are within one hundred miles of Florida, but light-years away in the relaxed and carefree culture and beautiful, undeveloped, scenic beauty. A sailing charter is the best way to experience The Bahamas. A sailboat can take you to secluded beaches with no footprints, underwater caves in which to snorkel (remember James Bond in Thunderbird), and undiscovered fishing spots. Occasionally, whales even wander within viewing range.

Sailboats may be chartered with a crew or "bareboat"--without a crew. A crew consists of the captain, a mate or mates to operate the ship, and a cook. Generally, one price includes the sailboat rental, all meals, beverages, and taxes. Often, fuel and dockage fees are also included. Extras like diving instruction or meals in port are additional. Gratuities to the staff are customary and are also additional.

Breathtaking Bahamas

Sailing vacations can be overnight, five nights, seven nights, or two-week adventures. Typical charter sailboats can accommodate from two to twelve guests, depending on the size of the sailboat. Sailing charters offer a flexibility not found on large cruise ships. The dress code is casual, the itinerary can be changed at a moment's notice, and the scenery is uncluttered by hundreds of tourists.

Book a sailing vacation with your favorite local or online travel agent, or contact a sailing tour operator. One call or site visit can confirm your sailboat, air transportation to and from your home city, and any accommodations you might want before or after the cruise. Sail away to an enjoyable Bahamas vacation on your next trip.
