Adventure Sailing Vacations

by Sandy Mitchell

A sailing vacation can be a great way to experience small, uncrowded ports and destinations. Such remote, pristine locales often make for excellent snorkeling, scuba diving, or fishing. In addition, many charter sailing boats have compressors on board to refill your dive tanks without going back to port.

Chartering a sailboat is a relaxed way to see the world: no dressing for dinner (unless you want to), no packing and unpacking to see different ports, and no ports crowded with hundreds of cruise passengers. Sailboat vacations are ideal for whale watching, exploring quaint fishing villages, or as a base for hiking and bicycle adventures.

Whales, Scuba, or Fishing

Sailboats may be chartered "bareboat," without a crew, or with a crew. Many sailboat charter operators offer sailing lessons, either onboard or ashore. A crew usually consists of a captain, one or more mates, and a cook to prepare delicious meals in the galley kitchen.

Reserve your sailboat vacation with your travel agent or through a specialty tour operator. One price, generally, includes your airfare, the charter boat, meals and provisions, and taxes. Fuel and mooring fees are also often included. Most charter boats have snorkeling and fishing equipment on board, but reserving scuba tanks and equipment usually requires an additional charge. Whether it's watersports, wildlife viewing, or wading in the uncharted fishing hole, an adventure sailing vacation can be customized to accommodate your tastes.
