Hawaii Sailing Vacations

by Sandy Mitchell

What better way to enjoy the island breezes, casual friendliness, and the diverse history of the Hawaiian Islands than by sailing from island to island? By chartering a sailboat, you avoid disrupting your vacation by packing and unpacking, waiting at the airport to fly to another island, or checking in and out of hotels. From the cosmopolitan city of Honolulu to the quiet, agricultural island of Lanai, Hawaii offers the American lifestyle in a lush, tropical setting.

Hawaii sailing vacations can be two-day jaunts or weeklong adventures. Each of Hawaii's seven islands has its own distinct personality. Wonder at the active, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on Hawaii, "the Big Island." Visit Lahaina, an 18th century whaling village on Maui. See the lovely, remote stretch of beach where "South Pacific" was filmed on Kauai, "the Garden Island." Hawaii has big-city life, remote, pristine wilderness, beautiful beaches, and craggy cliffs--all just waiting for you.

Charter sailboats can be small, fifty-foot charters for two guests or large, two-hundred-foot crafts that can accommodate up to twelve guests plus crew. Sailboats can be chartered with or without crew. With crewed charters, a cook is usually provided to create delicious meals from the local ingredients.

Hawaiian sailing vacations can be booked with a local or online travel agent or via a charter sailboat operator. One call or site visit can take care of airfare, the sailboat charter, and any accommodations you may need before or after the cruise. Many charter companies list specifications for their sailboats on their websites. Some even give virtual tours of their craft.
