CD Duplication Services

by Michelle Baugh

CD duplication is the process used by individuals in their home or at work, using a CD burning drive to duplicate a CD. CDs are manufactured with a special dye. During the burning process, lasers burn pits into the disc to duplicate the media.

Generally, CD duplication can be done at home. The majority of duplicated discs are not created for mass distribution or profit. Because of this, it is more cost-effective to burn discs at home, using a personal burner and software, as well as the appropriate blank media.

The costs involved in home CD duplication are relatively low. It is necessary to own or have access to a computer, a CD burner, and duplication software. Another basic requirement for home CD duplication is the appropriate blank media. Additional costs for duplication at home include, but are not limited to, labels and cases or sleeves to store the media once it is finished.

One point of confusion for many people is the difference between the different types of blank media available. The most common types of blank media for CD duplication are the CD-R (recordable) and the CD-RW (rewritable). When using a CD-R, once the media has been burned onto the disc, it cannot be overwritten in any way. No changes are allowed after burning is complete. A CD-RW is more expensive than a CD-R, but its contents can be modified at any time.
