CD-ROM Burning

by Michelle Baugh

Many people have questions about what a CD-ROM is. The word CD-ROM means "Read Only Memory." Information stored on CD-ROMS can only be played once it is finalized. This memory cannot be added to or revised in any way. Because of this, it is important to make sure that the final product is acceptable before the CD-ROM is completed.

CD-ROM discs can be read by CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives. These drives are standard on modern computers and modern game consoles. CD-ROM discs can hold more memory than many other forms of media, including cassette tapes and floppy disks. In addition, the data contained on a CD-ROM can be accessed much faster than earlier forms of media storage.

The uses of CD-ROM discs are varied. They can store many types of information pertinent to businesses for access at meetings, as well as an array of entertainment. As technology advances, many more uses for CD-ROM discs are being discovered.

An innovative way to use CD-ROM discs is for business cards. These discs are roughly the size of a traditional business card, and they have the appearance of one. They come packaged in plastic wallets for protection, and are useful at job fairs and exhibitions. Although they do not look like traditional discs, CD-ROM business cards can be played in a standard CD or DVD-ROM player. The information contained on the disc is tailored to an individual or company. An entire catalog or resume may be placed on the disc for easy retrieval by the recipient. The current limits for CD-ROM business cards are 33 megabytes of data, or three minutes of audio.
