Personal Liability Insurance

by Melissa Popp

Claims can put a damper on anybody's holiday. They have the potential to destroy not only financial security, but any future hope of economic stability. Personal liability insurance can be useful in protecting an individual from claims and other events for which they might be held liable.

When you buy a house, typically, you are required by state and local law to purchase some form of personal liability insurance. This coverage ensures that anybody who steps onto your property is covered in the event that they incur bodily injury, or personal property damage. For example, if a newly licensed driver runs into your mailbox and they claim that it was too far out into the road, your insurance would cover any court costs you might incur.

In addition, if your gardener cracks your driveway by being careless with his lawnmower, your personal liability insurance would not only cover any damages to the lawnmower, but also to the driveway. Personal liability insurance covers all aspects of negligence on your part as a homeowner, or as a tenant in the apartment you are renting. In that case, however, you would only be liable for any injury or damages that happen within the apartment itself and not the unit or building in its entirety.

Personal Liability Insurance is a Must for Everyone

Personal liability is a form of responsibility rarely found in the world today. Most people feel they do not need to cover their bases and insure themselves in such a manner. This line of thinking leads to heartache, financial loss and quite possibly an irreparable path to economic demise. Personal liability insurance can be a lifesaver in our lawsuit friendly world.
