Madrid Accommodations

by Sandy Mitchell

Madrid is a city rich in tradition, history, and culture. Long before America was a colony, the Spanish Empire touched lands from South America to Asia. Her diverse history is reflected in the cuisine, the architecture, and the customs here. Madrid's museums are some of the world's most important, her shopping is varied and unique, and the Spanish traditional Flamenco dancers are enchanting.

Staying in Madrid

Accommodations in Madrid are as diverse as the people who live there. Choose from the finest luxury hotels, reasonably priced and well-situated moderate hotels, bed and breakfasts, apartments, and hostels. The Art Nouveau Palace Hotel, built in 1912, is one of Madrid's finest. Located adjacent to Retiro Park and near the Prado Museum, this deluxe hotel is ideally situated for sightseers, as well as those visiting for business.

Moderately priced hotels abound near the Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via, ideal for tourists. Generally, rooms in this category are smallish by American standards, but are well-appointed with a private bath. Choose an apartment for a longer stay or to entertain business guests. Generally, these accommodations have one or more bedrooms, a separate living and dining area, kitchen, and bath. Since most of these units are individually owned, décor and amenities vary considerably.

Bed and breakfast accommodations offer visitors a chance to interact with Madrilenos (people who live in Madrid). These generally smaller inns offer cozy bedrooms, some with and some without private baths, in individual homes. A hearty Spanish breakfast is almost always included. Sometimes your hosts will also include a glass of Spanish sherry in the afternoon.
