Madrid Bed And Breakfast

by Sandy Mitchell

Accommodations in Madrid vary widely. There are grand, deluxe hotels with multiple restaurants, health club facilities, and room service. There are more moderately priced hotels with many of the same amenities, but, perhaps, with fewer staff and a little further away from the main tourist centers. Increasingly, though, bed and breakfast accommodations are gaining popularity with travelers to Madrid.

Stay with Someone who Lives in Madrid

The term "bed and breakfast" in Madrid applies to everything from a small room in a private home to a large, multi-room apartment. The common denominator with these accommodations is that they are privately owned and decorated, and they offer an affordable and cozy alternative to big, corporate, impersonal hotels.

Bed and breakfast hotels are generally less expensive than their hotel cousins. In addition, your host family can frequently give you insight into Madrid customs as well as tips on hot new restaurants and where the best shopping bargains are to be found. Facilities vary. Don't expect air conditioning, room service, elevators, or an on-site restaurant. Some units have an en-suite bathroom, but many do not. Make sure to ask, if this is important to you.

Breakfast is generally prepared by your Spanish hosts. Spanish breakfasts are heartier than the traditional continental breakfast found in France, Switzerland, and Italy. Eggs are a staple in Spain and they prepare them in dozens of delicious ways. Sausage, especially the native, spicy chorizo sausage, is another breakfast favorite, as is fresh fruit.
