Thing To Do In Madrid

by Sandy Mitchell

Madrid, steeped in centuries of history, yet surprisingly modern, entices visitors with her delicious cuisine, her varied museums, airy green expanses, and affordable accommodations. Madrid is also an ideal city to use as a home base as you explore the Spanish countryside. The ancient capital of Toledo and King Philips's fortress at El Escorial both lie within a short distance of Madrid.

Madrid Sightseeing Highlights

Relive the days of Ferdinand and Isabella and their favorite artisans at the Prado Museum. One of the world's most important museums, the Prado features works by El Greco, Goya, and Velazquez. The core of the Prado's collection is the former private collection of the Spanish Bourbon and Hapsburg royal families. The massive stone Royal Palace, former home of Bourbon kings, invites visitors to view her endless rooms--2000 of them--and her extensive antique tapestry collection.

City life in Madrid centers around the Plaza Mayor. Designed in the 17th century, this square was originally the site of commerce, public announcements, and canonizations. Today, the Plaza Mayor is a pedestrian area lined with cafés. In December, the square becomes a winter fairyland with vendors selling Christmas ornaments and other holiday specialties.

Don't miss the shopping in Madrid. Spanish leather goods, copperware, and pottery are especially attractive. The major shopping streets, the Gran Via and the Calle des Preciados, are home to Madrid's department stores and high-end boutiques.
