Virtual Private Network
VPN SecurityVPN security threats have the potential to bring down any business. Once a virus, worm or other breach of security hits your network, data and other information is vulnerable to deletion. This is not an option for most businesses and recognizing that VPN security threats exist is the first step to understanding just how much they can hurt your business. VPN Security Threats Are a Real ThreatThere are several forms of VPN security threats. Denial-of-Service (DOS), unauthorized access and confidentiality breaches are some of the most severe. DOS attacks occur when a third party sends so many requests to one computer it can no longer handle the load. It then shuts down and potentially locks out the user. Unauthorized access is when somebody accesses a file they are not supposed to have access to. This generally occurs when somebody cracks a password or finds another loophole in VPN security to gain access to a file. Confidentiality breaches are usually a byproduct of unauthorized access. The files being accessed are often sensitive in nature. Other forms of VPN security threats are less common. They include executing commands and destroying network resources. Data diddling is a form of destruction that changes numbers and dates in files in order to confuse employees. Data destruction occurs when files are deleted entirely from a hard drive connected to the network. Executing commands is something every computer user does when they turn on their machine. When a user is able to execute commands in a part of the network they do not normally have access to, they have managed to break the security barrier. Less common forms of attack can still bring down a network if executed properly. Security is of the utmost importance on a network to avoid disaster. ![]() Get all Networking articles via
