VPN Setup

by Melissa Popp

Virtual private networks (VPNs) should never be without a form of firewall. Firewalls are a form of software that connects one computer to a network. It is a security device that puts a shield between connections. It also acts as a way to prevent outside attacks from the Internet onto a personal computer.

Using application gateway protocols is the simplest form of firewall. This technique is commonly called a proxy. Proxies execute control over a connection, whether it is coming from a computer or going to another. While this form is the simplest, it is also the most costly when it comes to network resources. Proxies have to be set up on every computer in the network in order for them to be an effective firewall. This means that the network is not taking on much usage; the individual computers connected to it are eating up resources.

Packet filtering is another way to examine each and every packet of data being sent to and from computers on the network. This type of firewall is very restrictive. Most of the analysis that goes on has a predetermined solution. Some data that needs to transfer to another computer may not get there if the network determines it is unsafe, even if it is indeed safe.

Firewalls Are Essential During VPN Setup

With some form of firewall, a company is protected from outside attacks as well as any abuse that goes on within its own computers. Setting up a firewall should be a priority before the network is launched. Firewalls are a primary way to maintain security on a VPN and should be treated as such.
