Newsgroup ServerA newsgroup server is a set of computer software used to handle Usenet articles, or the posts from newsgroup subscribers. It exchanges articles with other servers, and provides an interface to read and post articles, usually with the assistance of a newsreader. Servers usually have different storage and speed capacities, which determine how information is processed and relayed to the newsgroup reader. When deciding which type of newsgroup server to use, it is important to review the completion and retention rates of each server. Retention refers to how long the server keeps articles posted to the newsgroups. Having a long enough retention rate is important, as it avoids having to access the server more than once a day. But, if the retention rate for articles is too long, it can slow down the network. A slow network impacts the download and viewing time of each article, or causes the newsgroup to be too large and unwieldy for its users. Another factor to consider when choosing a newsgroup server is the completion rate. This refers to the ability of the server to keep up with and receive all of the traffic. A server with a high completion rate will post most or all of the articles written to that newsgroup. If you are looking for a server, nearly all fee-based servers and many free servers will provide completion and retention rate information. When using a free server, it makes sense to test different servers until you find one you like. Furthermore, with a fee-based server, it pays to shop carefully. ![]() Get all Newsgroups articles via
