Medical Billing CareerAccounting work isn't usually what comes to mind when we think of careers in medicine. However, medical billing experts play an important role in the operation of hospitals, clinics, and private medical practices. Within the past ten years, nearly all medical establishments have become reliant on medical billing experts to handle all their payment procedures and to deal with insurance companies. As such, the industry has become extremely lucrative. Medical billing is complicated business. There are hundreds of ways to bill patients who have received medical care. In most cases, patients rely on insurance monies to cover medical payments. Therefore, a medical billing expert must understand various insurance coverage plans and organizations including preferred service providers (PPOs), health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and point of service plans (POS), among many others. It is the medical billing expert's job to make sure the service provider is properly reimbursed. Beyond understanding the billing procedures of various insurance programs, medical billing experts are trained to handle complicated payment schedules, collection procedures, and basic accounting. Likewise, a billing specialist must help prepare each patient's explanation of benefits (EOB). The EOB document outlines the billing process for patients and details the level of coverage their insurance provider is entitled to pay. Clearly, medical billing experts require specialized training. Although certification is not required to begin a career in medical billing, most hospitals and clinics prefer to hire well-trained, nationally certified professionals. Medical billing training can take as little as six months, and many colleges offer billing courses online. Medical billing is also known to offer a great amount of flexibility--more and more medical billing professionals work from home and set their own hours. ![]() Get all Medical Education articles via
