Medical Coding CareerAs health care providers overhaul their administrative and billing procedures to accommodate the complicated demands of insurance procedures and ever-evolving medical treatment services, they increasingly demand the service of expert medical billing and coding professionals. Medical coding experts play a vital role in the accounting and administration of health systems. Working with billing experts, medical coders ensure that health service providers are properly compensated for their work. Medical coders are trained to transfer patient information recorded by health service providers into specialized "language" used by insurance companies. This "language" consists of thousands of alphanumeric codes that correspond with the diagnoses, and each type of treatment a patient receives. Insurance companies use these codes to evaluate how they will compensate their medical insurance customers. Health care providers depend on medical coders, who work hand in hand with billing experts, to insure timely and proper payment for the services they provide. Medical coding can be extremely challenging. As the medical industry incorporates new methods of diagnosis and treatment and makes changes to old ones, medical coders must consistently update their own knowledge. The work coders do requires steadfast accuracy and integrity to insure all parties--doctor, patient, and insurance provider--are fairly billed and/or compensated. Because medical coders work closely with medical information, they must have an up-to-date knowledge of medical terminology and treatment types. Likewise, they must have strong clerical skills and be able to manage documents and information with great accuracy. Colleges and universities throughout the nation offer medical coding courses. Most medical coding courses demand at least one year of study prior to certification. ![]() Get all Medical Education articles via
