Medical Doctor Career

by Ian Harris

Few professionals garner as much respect as medical doctors. While the tangible rewards of working as an MD are obvious (doctors generally pull in top wages and benefits), most doctors report that the prospect of helping patients is what draws them to the field. Many well-trained doctors, in fact, forego large paychecks and comfortable private practices to work in under-served communities, hospital emergency rooms, or as part of international organizations that serve war-torn or epidemic-prone regions.

Most of us are most familiar with family doctors, also called general practitioners. General practitioners handle the majority of patient visits and are trained to treat the vast number of injuries and ailments. Most patients who are afflicted with an illness or injury visit a generalist first. Those patients who require sophisticated surgical procedures or more specialized care are referred to specialists.

The medical field is incredibly sophisticated and specialized. From podiatry to neurology, there are medical doctors who specialize in every aspect of human health. These specialists usually undergo the same training as general practitioners, and then some. A typical cardiologist, for example, completes roughly ten years of post-baccalaureate education, training, and residency. Because specialists are often responsible for performing complicated surgical procedures, and possess exhaustive knowledge in their particular field, medical specialist careers tend to be the most lucrative in the medical industry.

As the medical field adopts new and exciting ways to treat injury and disease, the demand for highly trained MDs increases. Although the rigors of medical school and residency are particularly difficult and competitive, thousands of doctors enter the workforce every year equipped with cutting-edge treatment know-how. The respect these doctors stand to receive rests on their role as lifesavers and contributors to public health.
