Medical Technology Career

Medical laboratory technicians play a critical role in patient diagnosis and treatment. Medical technology grows exponentially every year. To keep up with these advances, more and more well-trained medical technicians are needed. As such, careers in medical technology are among the fastest growing in the medical industry.

Medical technologists are skilled professionals who perform a barrage of tests and diagnostic procedures. Among the most important jobs they perform is disease detection. Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, technicians evaluate bodily fluids for the presence of parasites, bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. Medical technicians also monitor the effects and levels of administered medicines and match blood types prior to transfusion. The data gathered by medical technicians allow doctors to administer critical diagnoses and treatments.

The type and sophistication of the work laboratory technicians are qualified to perform is contingent on the extent of their education and training. Most medical technologists hold a bachelor's degree in a field related to medicine, biology, or chemistry; although some practicing lab technicians qualify for positions based on lab experience in other venues. In some cases, an associate's degree along with a year or two of hands-on training is sufficient to qualify a job candidate for a position in medical technology.

Many colleges and universities offer training in medical technology. Although some of these courses are offered online, the importance of hands-on training in the laboratory requires most students to attend on-site programs. Although not required in most states, licensure and registration ensure prospective lab technicians better starting wages and more opportunities for advancement. Certification is offered by several non-governmental organizations recognized by most health service organizations.
