Researching your family tree, or genealogy, is one of the most fascinating activities available on the Internet. A process that prior to the Internet required a huge amount of dedication, visiting county courthouses and pouring through old boxes of papers, can now be completed in front of a computer screen from one's own home.

There are a variety of ways to search for genealogy information. There are a number of genealogy search sites or databases that you can use to begin your search. These sites will normally allow you to begin your search for free. However, be cautious, as once you get started in your research, it is easy to want quick results and to start entering credit card information left and right.

While there are a variety of genealogy sites that operate on a pay-per-search basis, if you are willing to do a little hands-on research, you can find everything you need for free. The basis of any good genealogy search includes a variety of databases. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has an extensive database available that includes Social Security death records, census records and birth, marriage and death records from around the world. This is an excellent place to start.

There are national archives of information available over the Web, which are also quite useful, especially if your family has been in this country for some time. There is a variety of free genealogy information on the Internet. The real trick to tracking down your family tree is to maintain accurate records, take your time, and not allow yourself to get frustrated when you hit a brick wall.
