Undermount Kitchen Sinks

by Kathleen Gagne

Modern kitchen designs are moving in the direction of granite or tile kitchen countertops. One of the main reasons is that these countertop solutions are generally easier to care for and harder to damage with heat or stains. They also offer a unique way to install the typical sink no matter what its configuration.

More and more designers are making the choice for undermount sinks. The rim of the sink itself is actually under the edge of the countertop so that there is little chance of any water or mold establishing itself around the rim of the sink. This style of sink and counter results in a cleaner, unbroken line.

Select an Undermount Kitchen Sink

The advantages of an undermount sink are clear, especially when it comes to the elegance of design that can be achieved with the right sink and countertop. Depending on the material from which the sink is manufactured, the installation of one model may be very different from that of another similar model. Some undermount sinks require screws, and they all require caulking material to prevent the seepage of water into the cabinets below the installed sink.

When an undermount sink is installed, faucets and handles are the only elements above the countertop. Because of this, it is easier to clean the faucets while, at the same time, it means that a very elegant, functional faucet set can be displayed to its best design advantage. The choice of an undermount sink is a very good one, but potential buyers should be aware that the sink will have to be mounted carefully on a sturdy base so that the sink does not pull away from the countertop.

Discuss this issue with your installer or, if you are installing it yourself, be sure to follow directions carefully. Then you will be assured that your beautiful sink will be functional for years to come.
