In general, computer hardware consists of the parts of the computer that you can see, along with their components. Software consists of all of the programs that must be input into your computer to make it run. Below are the main types of computer hardware that are easily recognizable on a desktop and, in some cases, held internally on a laptop.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The central processing unit, or the brains of the computer, is contained in the large box portion of desktops or in the interior of laptops. This part of the computer includes a chip that gives your computer the ability to work. The CPU allows your computer to understand and follow through with the commands of its processing system and programs. The outlets connecting the CPU to the monitor, printer, mouse, keyboard, etc. are known as ports. There are also internal ports located inside of the CPU in both laptop and desktop computers. The CPU also contains CD, DVD, and other drives that allow you to load software into your computer. The CPU also contains the hard drive and the RAM memory. The hard drive allows you to store information, including all your software. The RAM memory allows you to run different programs at the same time.

The monitor is the computer part that looks like a screen, allowing you to view the programs running on your computer. The keyboard is the typewriter part of the computer that allows users to enter specific commands and specific information into the computer. The mouse is the small box that you use to manipulate the arrow that you will see on your computer screen after correctly connecting the main parts of your computer. It allows users the ability to navigate around the computer with more flexibility and to enact predetermined commands. Also considered accessories, speakers are types of hardware that allow users to hear sound from their computers. Most laptops have internal speakers. A modem is a type of hardware contained inside of the CPU. Modems allow computers to connect externally with other computers, giving users the ability to access the Internet.

As its name infers, a printer allows you to print different things that are present on your computer screen. In order to print documents, pictures, and more, you must purchase ink and paper. There are two main types of printers, laser printers (which are faster) and ink jets (which are slower, but less expensive). Because they are not necessary for a computer to function, printers are considered accessories.

Software

In order for your computer to function, you will have to input software containing an operating system, like Windows or Mac. In fact, every piece of hardware that is connected to your computer will require corresponding software to enable it to work properly. Any other type of programs that you install into your computer, including games, word processing systems, etc. are also considered software.
