Dell Computer

by Dianna Lavidalie

Founded in 1984 by nineteen-year-old Michael Dell, the Dell Computer Corporation realized early success. This success was due in large part to Dell Computer's then highly innovative notion of providing customers with custom-built computers direct from the manufacturer. This eliminated the need for retailers, hence allowing the cost of Dell computers to be cheaper than the competitors'. Though it has since been imitated by many computer companies, Dell Computer continues to be the manufacturer that sells the most computers directly to its customers.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Dell Computer has offices throughout the world. In 2004, Dell employed over 50,000 people and had a profit of over three billion dollars. Though it changed its name to Dell Inc. in 2003 to reflect its entrance into different markets like computer accessories, servers, and other electronic devices, Dell is still best known for selling personal computers.

Today, Dell computers and other Dell products can be bought via the Internet at Dell's website, by visiting a local Dell Direct Store, or by calling 1-800-915-3335. Dell offers a variety of business and personal computers and notebooks/laptops, with plenty of prices and payment options. Additionally, Dell also offers refurbished items, which can amount to significant savings for its customers.

Despite its obvious success rate, Dell computers are not for everyone. Because they often have no local point of contact, some Dell computer customers feel frustrated by their inability to have "face to face" communication with a company or store representative should a problem arise. Additionally, when Dell customers face a problem that cannot be fixed by troubleshooting with a technician over the telephone, they must go through the hassle of packaging and shipping their computer back for servicing.
