Gateway Computer

by Dianna Lavidalie

In 1985, Ted Waitt founded Gateway Computers (previously known as Gateway 2000 until 1998). Gateway's computers eventually became one of the most popular types of personal computers sold in the United States. Initially, Gateway Computers became familiar to consumers through its marketing campaign, which included products that were delivered in black-and-white spotted boxes. This paid homage to the company's roots, a farmhouse in Iowa.

As of early 2005, Gateway had just under 2,000 employees and its headquarters are in Irvine, California. In 1997, Gateway bought Advanced Logic Research and in March 2004, it acquired eMachines. Also in 2004, a former eMachines executive, Wayne Inouye, became the president of the Gateway Computers organization.

Gateway unsuccessfully tried to open a series of stores, called Gateway Country, which completely ceased operation in 2004. Instead, the success of Gateway Computers stems solely from its efforts to directly sell to consumers via mail orders. While the elimination of retailers may result in lower prices for consumers, it also lacks local contacts, which many buyers find necessary when making such a large purchase.

Today's product lines include computer accessories, servers, notebooks, and Gateway computers for both home and business use. Gateway computers created for home use include a series of desktops and notebooks that can be custom-built to order. These Gateway computers utilize a variety of processing systems, including Intel Pentium and Celeron, and also use Windows-based operating systems. Gateway home computers can be purchased by visiting the company's website or by calling 800-369-1409.
