Venture Capital Investor

by Amy Hunter

The typical venture capital investor can be your neighbor, your pension company, or a high-flying millionaire. During the hot dotcom period in the late '80s and '90s, the venture capital market made and lost millions of dollars. Now, while providing venture capital is still a relatively risky investment choice, it is something invested in daily by many people.

One reason that venture capital investments are popular is their rate of return. As with any investment, the rate of risk is tied to the rate of return. An investment made with venture capital can and should return more than the purchase of some certificates of deposit from your local bank. If you can tolerate the risk, you may want to consider putting some money in a venture capital investment.

Another reason many people choose to invest in venture capital is because it is interesting. Although most of us do not think of our investments on a daily basis, there is no denying that reading a newspaper article that mentions "your company" and its latest accomplishment is more exciting than letting a treasury bond mature.

The wide variety of venture capital firms makes it possible to pick and choose your investment based on its history, performance, and investment philosophy. Like any investment option, it pays to do your homework. There is a place for venture capital investment in most portfolios. By taking the time to round out your choices, and investing in companies that do the same, you can enjoy the benefits of higher earnings while still being somewhat protected from the risks.
