Private Venture Capital

by Amy Hunter

To understand how venture capital works, it is important to realize that venture capital firms deal with private money. An investor looking for a place to invest with a chance at making a return on their money invests in a particular venture capital firm.

The firm uses the money, in turn, to make its investments. As someone contributing money only to the venture capital firm, you will not have any direct involvement in what endeavors are supported by your cash. That is why it is important to shop around before you invest your money. Venture capital firms have information available, just as all other investment vehicles do. This information, available online or through the mail, gives you an idea of what types of investments the firm supports, and their average return. Only invest if you are comfortable with both pieces of information.

The managing partners are the members that perform the actual choosing of investments and place people within the companies. They will do the day-to-day work in a private venture capital firm. As a limited partner, your main duty is the initial investment of money.

A private venture capital firm can be an excellent place to park some of your money, as long as you go in with your eyes open. Your money will be tied up for a period of time, and you are not guaranteed a return. That said, the managing partners realize that it is their job to make sure that you, as well as other investors, make money. By choosing a well-respected company that has been in business for awhile, you can be sure that they are making the best decisions possible and working in the best interest of your money.
