Cold Fusion Tutorials

by Shirley Parker

Like any other form of programming, ColdFusion has rules that enable it to work the way it was designed. When a website is built with ColdFusion, the end results save countless hours of work, once a developer has mastered the many functions available. It has its own language, CFML, or ColdFusion Markup Language, which uses a tag-based format.

ColdFusion enables interactivity with databases like Access, Oracle, or MySQL. It does this by using Structured Query Language (SQL) to retrieve and display information, which can also be formatted and stored. Since ColdFusion is a "server side" language, ColdFusion scripts run properly on all browsers.

A live class in ColdFusion is valuable because of interaction with other class members. However, tutorials for getting started in ColdFusion--and for its advanced features--are available on the Internet, as well as in authoritative after-market books. Some online presentations are quite in-depth and get down to the nitty-gritty of examples of a bad website. Personal bias is pretty easily spotted, of course, but it's helpful when someone points out chuckholes to avoid on the highway.

On the other hand, a developer who is new to ColdFusion probably will first need assistance with uploading files to his/her web host. Another tutorial might explain that dynamic websites can allow visitors to choose the way they want the site to look while they're looking around. A little more involved tutorial might be setting up a poll on a website for visitors to vote on one or more topics of the webmaster's choice. Prospective voters shouldn't be able to see the current statistics first, as that might influence the results.
