Special Event Planning
Event Planning JobsInterested individuals sometimes enter the event planning field by the side door. For example, they might first have enjoyed cooking so much that they became caterers, especially if they also went through chef's training. They see the many other aspects of an event that have been, or are being, set up around them, when they arrive to cook the food or bring in delicious box lunches. (Anyone who has not yet enjoyed a box lunch prepared by a top-notch caterer is in for a treat someday!) Other people started out planning fundraising events for their children's school, or religious congregation, or other volunteer network. Such people tend to be a little more tolerant of mistakes, as long as mishaps are not egregious. Helping in this way is a good opportunity to learn how to do things right, and what to avoid. Further, being able to put that kind of experience on a resume can go a long way toward getting paid employment as an event planner. If you want to work close to home, the local newspaper is probably more useful than surfing the Web for an event planning job. However, if your newspaper is like mine, they also put the classified ads online. If you have access to a magazine in any business field that interests you, the publisher usually allows classified ads, also. Those individuals who are not tied down by real estate or family issues may want to relocate for the job of their dreams. In this case, there are online services that will distribute your resume all over North America for a fee. There are drawbacks to this approach, so find out if they're spamming employers, or if they are contacting only top recruiters, for example. Professional job banks are an excellent place to look, too, although you may have to get creative with keyword searches. The job banks include America's JobBank, Meeting Professionals International Job Bank, National Association of Catering Executives, Monster, HotJobs, Employment 911, as well as job sites for the entertainment industry. ![]() Get all Events articles via
