Event Planning Certification

by Shirley Parker

Professional certification in any field never hurts. However, no one needs a certificate from anyone to get those first jobs as an event planner. Neither does anyone need to be licensed. So, if money is in short supply, talented individuals should start looking for chances to organize events. Opportunities are all around us and the experiences will be invaluable.

Even though a professional certificate is not required, being able to advertise oneself as a certified event planner, does portray a certain level of professionalism. It is something to consider, when circumstances allow it. However, you should not be intimidated by your lack of certification. Actual hands-on experience will let you know whether you really like the work, before you invest in formal tuition to obtain certification.

When you are ready for professional training and guidance, you will want to look for a comprehensive course. It will cover the basics of starting and running your own business, if you have not already checked with the Small Business Administration. A good course will also cover working with reputable vendors who will not let you down, and budgeting for events of various sizes. Of course, the client's budget will determine what you can spend overall.

You will find that schools offering certification classes vary widely in both the depth of knowledge they impart and their assistance in obtaining clients after you earn your professional certificate. Some only teach event planning and nothing else at all, while others cover many types of studies. If you already have contacts in the event planning arena, you will rely less on a school's referrals to obtain work.
