Event Planning Career

by Shirley Parker

Event planning can be a hectic and exciting career, full of changing parameters for each customer you are dealing with simultaneously. A career as an event planner may not be a 24-hour job all the time, but there will be plenty of seven-day weeks, all filled with long, busy hours. The job itself can be entertainment, when you watch yourself actually handling all the suppliers, who must bring it all together on time.

Do you work with a daily/weekly planner, so that you can see where your time has gone over the past three months, and where it will be going for the next three? If not, are you, at least, extremely detail-oriented? Are you organized enough to schedule time just for you? If so--and you must be able to do that--you will thrive in a busy career like event planning, where so many things are going on at the same time. On the other hand, if multi-tasking drives you crazy, think twice, and then again, before venturing into the event planning field.

Multi-tasking is actually not good for our health, but most people end up doing it for a major portion of their waking hours. Even so, "a major portion" is not the same as never being able to get away from it. One good way to "chill" is to turn off the cellphone the second you get into your vehicle. Make it a rule that you will not take or make phone calls while you are driving. Find a radio station and listen to happy music instead. Everyone else milling around you on the highways and sidewalks will thank you for that decision, and you will arrive far more relaxed at your next appointment.

Will I Have To Specialize To Get Work?

The events you plan will almost always vary in size. You will welcome every opportunity to develop your creativity with many different themes for a variety of small, moderate and large events. However, an entire crew of specialists generally handles the spectacular occasions seen by millions. A by-product of your growing career will be voluntarily going to every event you hear about, and then figuring out how things were handled differently than you might have done them. As for getting into the career, natural ability will take you far, along with planning family anniversaries, office baby showers, charity events, and every other opportunity that presents itself.
