Event Planning Course

by Shirley Parker

When you are looking for instruction in the form of an event planning course, asking a school if it has former students in your area is a good idea. However, if a student did not give permission to be contacted, it may be difficult to find out whether she had a positive or negative experience. Testimonials posted on websites and elsewhere are nice to read, but anyone can write a testimonial. A good reference is more compelling.

Personal networking is always a great resource when you need to find out about a school's reputation. Otherwise, research with licensing agencies or the Better Business Bureau can be somewhat helpful. However, they will not tell you if complaints have been filed where no disciplinary action was taken; they might tell you if a business or school has been reprimanded, or fined, or lost any accreditation it might have had.

A good event planning course will cover the planning of themed events, whether they be country and western, football heroes, space exploration, or South Sea Islands. It will also go into detail about how to plan corporate celebrations, large weddings, Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah, Quinceañera, and Sweet Sixteen occasions. It is best if the event planner is a member of the Jewish faith to plan Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Quinceañera is a Mexican celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, so again, a cultural insider can best assist the mother with preparing for this elaborate event, if help is wanted.

In many cases, course materials can be studied at home. You may also work with an assigned trainer, coach or mentor from certain schools. To get a good grounding in event planning on your own, check bookstores, both traditional and online. There are a number of publications designed just for the person who quickly needs to learn what event planning is all about.
