Event Planning Guide

by Shirley Parker

Event planning guides are available on the Internet, through distance learning, and at the bookstore. Undoubtedly, the chain stores in or near your town will carry a selection of useful event planning books. In addition, an independent bookseller will be more than happy to order one for you, if he doesn't happen to specialize in entrepreneurial businesses.

Event planning has become quite a well-received career choice, partly because it is now considered respectable, while not requiring years of preparation. Mostly, it is popular because it is generally enjoyable, though hard work, and can pay well for the flourishing entrepreneur. Of course, it can be difficult to know how much to charge a client for your services when you are starting out. If you can get your first assignments as a consultant with an existing firm, you will receive a percentage of the fees they receive. That will give you some idea of what to charge, when you strike out on your own.

Another way to find out about fees is to inquire of several different planners what they would charge you for an event. However, it is very unfair to waste someone's time. Have a real event in mind before asking them over the telephone for a ballpark figure. They may not want to quote without sitting down with you, but just explain that you need a range for now. Would their fee be $500 or closer to $3,000, for example? If the fee is reasonable, you might want to go ahead and hire them for the occasion, after conducting an interview.

Depending on the age group served, the venue for an event can be exciting, upbeat, and replete with laser light shows. At the other end of the spectrum, the event can be a delightful trip down memory lane, with lots of vintage photos, favorite flowers, old-time dancing, and more than a few tears of joy. Weddings, of course, are in a wonderful class of their own. Remember the smaller events, too. They can be a delight to plan and you will remember them fondly, when herding the cats of a much larger celebration.
