Garden Fountains

by Daniel Evans

Garden fountains, like fountains of other stripes and uses, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions. Of course, since they're designed for outdoor use, the materials used are studier than those used for indoor fountains. Some mimic the traditional round fountains seen in European or Mexican cities; others use cherubic sculptures of children; and still others are modernistic art creations. A quick search online will show, quite literally, thousands of different designs, styles and prices.

Garden fountains are an excellent addition to most backyards or outdoor areas. The size of your fountain is, of course, something to consider. It doesn't make much sense to put an enormous fountain in the common area of a condo. However, an outdoor wall fountain will likely find a place in even the most cramped quarters. If you have the space, money and desire, the gigantic creations that call to mind Italian public plazas are available. But in general, fountains don't take up much space.

If you have pets--and in particular, if you own a dog--carefully consider the type of fountain you want. If you choose a ground-level fountain, your pet might well consider it a water dish or swimming pool. Using an outdoor wall fountain usually gets around this issue.

Using decorative fencing can also help keep your dog from places he's not wanted. And let's not forget our feathered friends: birds will likely see your fountain as a birdbath, which may or may not be what you had in mind. A bit of planning will keep you, your pets and the birds in your area happy and content.
